Embers in the Dust

Quiet stories from the edges

About Embers in the Dust

Embers in the Dust is an independent fiction project built around one idea: stories are most interesting when they take people seriously.

This site exists to host fiction that follows characters closely—into unfamiliar situations, difficult choices, and moments that change them. The settings, genres, and stakes vary. The focus does not.

What You’ll Find Here

You’ll find a mix of:

  • Short fiction and serialized stories
  • Experiments in different genres and tones
  • Audio and visual adaptations when they serve the work

Some stories are set in established worlds as transformative fan fiction. Others are original. New projects may move in very different directions from earlier ones.

That’s intentional.

What Ties the Work Together

Rather than a single genre or theme, the work here shares a few underlying principles:

  • Character first — plot exists to test people, not the other way around
  • Psychological plausibility — reactions and decisions are meant to feel earned
  • Restraint — implications often matter more than explanation
  • Consequences — choices carry weight, even when they’re understandable

These principles apply whether the story is quiet or violent, grounded or speculative, bleak or hopeful.

Why This Exists

This project exists as a place to explore ideas without committing to a single lane.

Some stories interrogate survival or identity. Others may lean toward mystery, noir, speculative history, or something harder to classify. The common thread is not subject matter—it’s attention.

About the Author

Embers in the Dust is created and maintained by a single author. Writing, editing, audio production, artwork direction, and site development all happen under one roof.

The emphasis is on cohesion and care rather than volume or trend-chasing.

About Notifications

If you choose to subscribe for updates, expect variety.

Notifications are used sparingly, and new releases may differ significantly in tone, genre, or scope from previous ones. Subscribing means following an evolving body of work—not a single series or theme.

Looking Ahead

Right now, the site focuses on making fiction accessible and easy to read or listen to.

In the future, it may expand to include:

  • Original long-form work
  • Collected editions
  • Optional paid releases

Any expansion will be additive. Existing free work won’t disappear behind a paywall.
